A race against time for entries

Paul Tollafield in the skeleton outfit he is planning to wear while running the Swindon Half-marathon Ref: 99280-70SEPTEMBER 15: RUNNERS had better be quick if they want to take part in this year's Swindon Half- marathon. Backed by the Advertiser, the event on Sunday, October 16 promises to be even bigger than last year.

So far, about 1,100 applications have been received by our partners Nationwide.

Michelle Leighton, a spokeswoman for the finance giant, stressed that applications cannot be processed after next Friday, September 23.

"It is important that anyone who wants to take part in the half- marathon gets their application in now," she said.

"All runners will be given a microchip that will record their time. Because of this technology we are unable to extend the deadline for applications."

About 900 people took part in last year's run and Michelle said organisers are working flat out to ensure the day goes smoothly.

She appealed to runners to do their bit by making sure they are in shape.

"They should be stepping up their training now," she said.

"We would also like volunteers to help marshal the event."

Among the runners will be Paul Tollafield, a funeral director at Hillier's in Whitworth Street.

And the 46-year-old, who plans to run the course in a skeleton's costume, expects to raise a few eyebrows.

"The lads at Hillier's thought of the idea," said Paul.

"It's just a bit of fun the boss was okay with the idea."

Paul, who ran last year's gruelling course in 1hr 51 mins, will be raising cash for Thamesdown Hydrotherapy Pool.

He said: "My dad, David, recently had two synthetic knee joints fitted and is a regular at the pool.

"So far I've raised about £400 but I'm looking to raise even more.

"I'm busy training. I have been wearing hats and other warm weather gear to prepare because I haven't wanted to run in my skeleton gear around Swindon."

Swindon Council is also helping organise the event. Interim chief executive Mike Pitt said: "It is a fantastic event for local people to get involved in. It raises the profile of Swindon, both locally and nationally."

As well as the 13.3-mile run there will be a two-mile fun run and a 4.3-mile multi-terrain run.

The half-marathon costs £13 to take part or £12.50 with a Swindon Card, with extra concessions to specific sports club members.

The 4.3-mile run costs £6 or £5 with a Swindon Card, while the two-mile run costs £3 or £2.50 with a Swindon Card. All those who complete it will be given a T-shirt and medal.

Entry forms are available from most newspaper outlets. Applicants can also apply online at www.swindonhalfmarathon.co.uk
