Pupil's own design turned into school sign

Mathew Cooper and Nia Picton-Philips hold the new sign which Mathew designed 17174/01YOUNG artist Mathew Cooper last week returned after the holidays to Corsham Regis Primary School to find a sign which he had designed standing proudly outside.

Mathew, seven, had penned two children shaking hands on a sunny day in a competition to find a new school sign.

His design, which included a giant crown representing the school name, was chosen by the school governors in January this year.

Headteacher Lindsay Wood said: "We are really pleased with the sign. It's nice to start the school year with a new sign to get us back on the map. Mathew was the only one with the idea of two children shaking hands. I've got no idea where it came from.

"The children are delighted that their efforts are now rewarded and they have a say in how this school is run."

The design by runner-up Nia Picton-Philips, also seven, was turned into a school welcome mat.

The two winning designers were presented with book tokens.

Mrs Wood said: "They were both in Year 3 when they made the designs. It's surprising that they're both younger ones. They did a really good job."
