Wootton Bassett Post Office manager Sanjay Soni is urging residents not to panic when the counter closes for business next week.
The post office, but not the shop, will close at 5.30pm next Thursday for refurbishment work in accordance with the Disability Act.
It will reopen at 9am on Monday September 26. During the week and a half it is closed customers will be able to go to the Poet's Field Post Office on Gainsborough Avenue for small transactions.
Bigger matters, such as DVLA licenses or passport renewals, will have to been taken to the main post offices in either Swindon or Chippenham.
Mr Soni said: "We don't want people worrying that we're closing because we're not and we want to see all our customers back again. Once the work is done people will see the difference and it will be very nice."
New lighting and carpets are due to be installed with further works hopefully completed by the end of October.
On Thursday the town council planning committee supported an application from Mr Soni to replace the ceiling on the first floor rooms above the Post Office which is a listed building.
