Soccer game proposal leads to perfect match

Matthew Wood who has married Iren Novotni at St Mary's Church, Lydiard ParkA SWINDON Town fan who proposed to his girlfriend in front of thousands of fans at the County Ground has seen the job through.

Season ticket-holder Matthew Wood, 32, married his girlfriend Iren Novotni, 31, at St Mary's Church in Lydiard Park.

Matthew went down on one knee at half-time during Swindon Town's FA Cup match against Sheffield Wednesday last November and an astonished Iren said 'yes'.

The couple, who live in Tyburn Close in Grange Park, have two children, Liam, nine, and Lydia, seven.

They were both at the service on Saturday.

Matthew, who works in IT for Nationwide, bought a special VIP ticket for the match last season and asked the club if he could propose on the pitch at half-time.

Iren, an Asda employee, knew nothing about her boyfriend's plan, and was amazed to find herself centre-stage.

Afterwards they were given a champagne reception by the club, which was a perfect end to a day when Swindon Town beat Sheffield Wednesday 4-1.

In March the club was granted a licence to hold civil weddings at the ground.

Nobody has yet taken advantage of the new licence, but the club have two unconfirmed bookings for weddings next year.
