Anger over church raid

DOCUMENTS listing all the births, marriages and deaths in the village of Imber since the 17th century have been stolen from its church.

The three folders containing the information were taken from St Giles' Church at some time between April and August.

The church is only open to the public once a year for an Easter service. The village has been unoccupied since the army took it over after the Second World War.

But it was discovered last week that a window in the church had been smashed and the folders, together with 50 postcards depicting the village, had gone. John Syme, chairman of the Friends of Imber church, said: "We are shocked and angry."

Police are investigating.
