Croft are ideal hosts

Action from the Shaw v Wanborough game Ref: 99127-7/5CROFT made the most of home advantage at their fourth annual six-a-side tournament. The host club dominated the under 11 section with Croft C seeing off Croft A by a single goal in the final, George Bouverie-Brine on target to seal the silverware.

Croft were also finalists in the under 12 competition but had to make do with runners-up medals on this occasion as Cirencester claimed the spoils.

Elsewhere, the Bristol Gladiators reigned supreme.

They left Swindon with two trophies under their belts with victory in the under nine and under 13 categories.

But there was more local success at under 14 level as Brunel Boys B edged out Westlea Wanderers in the final.

Croft's Becky Gammon was delighted with the number of teams taking part particularly given the other distractions of a sunny Bank Holiday weekend.

She said: "The turn-out was probably a bit better than we usually get.

"As we hold the tournament on the August Bank Holiday we can sometimes struggle for teams.

"But there were 110 over the age groups which equates to 660-plus players."

"We ran sections from under eights through to under 14s.

"The under eights was non-competitive and all the players were given medals for their efforts."

Croft will operate 11 teams in the North Wilts & District Youth League this season.

The campaign kicks off on Sunday and Gammon is looking forward to it.

She added: "With all the other tournaments in the summer being end-of-season, we deliberately make ours more of a pre-season warm-up.

"And our own preparations for the new season at Croft are going well as the teams showed in the tournament."

HIGHWORTH Juniors' under 10 team are keen to attract a couple of new players head of the new league season.
