Locarno bin blaze

FIREFIGHTERS say a blaze in a bin by the Locarno building in Old Town was not started deliberately.

The Locarno building, which was the subject of a failed bid to transform it in to a nightclub, has been hit by fire twice in recent years.

The building, owned by Gael Mackenzie, who also owns Mackenzie's bar in Wood Street, partially collapsed after a major fire in May 2003 and it was damaged in a blaze again in May 2004.

A crew from Swindon central station was called to the scene at 11.20pm on Sunday.

They needed a hose reel to tackle the flames and had left the scene by midnight.

A spokeswoman for Wiltshire Fire Brigade said the building was not in danger from the fire.
