Advice on dealing with bogus callers

ELDERLY people have been warned about the dangers of bogus callers as part of a police crackdown.

Wiltshire police and West Wiltshire Housing Society worked together to provide a talk for residents at St Margaret's Court, Bradford on Avon, aimed at advising older people about security in their homes.

Mark Abbott, neighbourhood watch and crime reduction officer, said said: "Most people are genuine but there are those who are conmen who turn up unannounced and succeed in conning their way into homes."

Some use props like fake identity cards and overalls with company logos. They often work in pairs.

Mr Abbott advised people to follow the "stop, chain, check" method whenever someone unexpected knocks on the door.

Mr Abbott said: "Only let them in if you are satisfied they are genuine and you are happy to do so. If you are suspicious or uncomfortable ask them to call back later and arrange a friend to be there. If in doubt, do not let them in. If they are acting suspiciously or pressurising you call the police."
