Yellow lines to spread in rat run

TOWN councillors in Marlborough have welcomed a proposal by Wiltshire County Council to extend the double yellow line no-parking areas in Frees Avenue.

For years the town council and local police officers have expressed concern about parked cars causing an obstruction in Frees Avenue.

The busy road over The Common carries traffic going between Marlborough and Wootton Bassett and is used as a rat run morning and afternoon by Swindon commuters.

Last year some short stretches of double yellow lines were put down to create passing bays in between the parked cars.

There was some concern that drivers emerging from Hyde Lane had their view towards Marlborough obstructed by parked cars. This concern was heightened when a local veterinary nurse was badly hurt in a crash at the Hyde Lane junction.

The county council is now proposing to extend the double yellow lines, particularly on either side of the Frees Avenue junction with Hyde Lane.
