Whirlwind start gives Calne an easy victory

Calne travelled to Devizes 2nd for their first outing of the season and came away with a commanding 34-5 victory.

The visitors set out their intentions in a blistering opening 20 minutes which effectively saw off their local rivals.

The Anchor Road outfit fielded a side mixed with first and second team players but still managed to produce a dominant performance.

Calne bossed the contact area, ensuring a constant stream of quick balls to the backs.

And they used their possession well, especially in the opening 20 minutes of the game.

Devizes found themselves 20 points down after only 20 minutes, a spell which left the host side chasing the game.

The second quarter was quieter as Devizes managed to slow down the steady flow of ball that Calne were winning.

Undeterred, Calne kept their heads down and grafted away and were soon rewarded with a Pete McGarry try.

The tall, rangy second row player set off from the 25-yard line with two supporting runners in tow.

His dummy pass fooled the defence and he dived over to score a fantastic try.

Devizes managed to stem the flow of Calne's game as they upped their physical game.

The quality of rugby though dropped dramatically during this third quarter as certain players were targeted and were lucky not to leave the field without injury.

Calne rode the storm out though and continued to play some good rugby.

Calne finished with another superb spell of rugby as they wrapped up a fine win.

Despite only being allowed small amounts of space from the referee, Calne cut through the home defence on two more occasions.

Sidelined captain, Andrew Donegan, was impressed by try-scoring performances from stand-in fly-half Neil Young, vice captain Neil Watkins, Lewis Bakers and youngster Seth Griffin.

The latter's try was added to by Max Whiston, Ian Smart and McGarry's spectacular effort.
