Westbury United 4, Biddestone 0

A STUNNING 35-yard volley capped a virtuoso performance from Wayne Wheeler on Wednesday night as Westbury continued their winning start to the Division One season.

Wheeler is the last of Westbury's attacking trio to be at Meadow Lane, with Jerad O'Pray and Toby Colbourne now at Corsham Town, but after an inspired display, boss Paul Brickley insisted he would not swap him for anyone.

Wheeler forced Westbury's opener on 22 minutes with a driven low cross that rebounded into the net off Biddestone defender Tim Tasker and ten minutes later his rasping volley doubled the lead.

Westbury continued to push after the break, with Wheeler looking a constant threat, and it was his run and shot that allowed 16-year-old David Thompson slot home the rebound.

Paul Beavers completed the scoring with a rare left footed effort but at the final whistle it was Wheeler everyone was talking about.

Brickley said: "Wayne is looking very sharp. He has so much pace and in this league that is going to cause any defenders problems.

"If you had given me a choice out of Jerad, Toby or Wayne I would choose to keep Wayne every time, that is how much I rate him.

"His goal was a quality strike that not a lot of players would be capable of and hopefully he can carry on this form into the rest of the season."

Westbury never looked troubled by their North Wiltshire rivals with goalkeeper Nick Evans not being forced into a save.

Ashley Groves and Thompson dominated the midfield while Matty Bown and Wheeler linked well up front to cause Biddestone's defence all sorts of problems.

On the positive side for the visitors were the performances of lively left winger Luke Gullick and defenders Eddie Drury and Jack Nicholas, but it was never going to be enough to stop Westbury picking up their second successive win.

Brickley said: "This time last year we didn't have a point, so yes it is a very good victory. We have not got as many stars this season and I think that has shown in the better attitude of the players.

"I thought we battled hard and worked hard but I don't think our performance was up to the standard we set on Saturday."

Westbury entertain Newquay tomorrow in a qualifying round of the FA Cup with the winners facing a trip to Melksham in the next round a week later.

Brickley said: "It would be nice if we could get through a couple of rounds as it would be good money for the club, but the league is a priority.

"The winners of tomorrow's game will have a very tough task against Melksham because I think they are a very good side who will finish in the top three of four this season."

Westbury entertain Bradford Town on Tuesday night.
