Jenny accepts challenge and gets in the swim for charity

Swimming enthusiast Jenny Mayne swam the channel to raise money for charity without even leaving west Wiltshire.

Mrs Mayne, 47, swam 1,424 lengths at Bradford on Avon and Trowbridge swimming pools over two weeks, raising £500 for Alzheimer's Support.

She said: "At first I was really nervous and thought I would never do it but then I got really into it and really I think I could have carried on forever. I really enjoyed it and was actually quite disappointed when I finished."

Mrs Mayne is assistant manager of the Polebarn Club, Trowbridge, which provides respite care for people with Alzheimer's Disease.

The club gives carers a break while also ensuring members get to do something they really enjoy, from outings to the shops or theatre to simply enjoying a cup of tea with friends.

The club relies on fundraising to provide a vital service and Mrs Mayne wanted to do her bit.

She began her marathon swimming effort on August 1 and swam her final length on Sunday.

She said: "Everyone has been fantastic and staff at the pools were so good. I want to thank everyone for their support because without that I couldn't have done it."

Mrs Mayne plans to carry on swimming as much as possible and is already looking towards her next fundraising challenge.

Next year she is considering a sponsored cycle ride.
