Popular landlord loses cancer fight

Dave RogersPOPULAR landlord Dave Rogers has died after a brave fight against cancer.

His sons have paid tribute to their father who they say will be sadly missed by many and will be forever remembered standing behind the bar with a pint in his hand.

Mr Rogers, who was 67 when he died, was landlord of The Lady Margaret now The Sandgate in Lower Stratton for 30 years.

His son Stephen, 42, from Stratton, described his father as a very well-liked publican.

"When he was younger all the girls in the bar thought he was really good looking," said Stephen.

"He was definitely a man's man when he wasn't chasing the ladies."

And his sons say the former landlord had a real passion for cars and golf.

He was often seen perfecting his swing at the golf course in Shrivenham.

Before he took over The Lady Margaret on Oxford Road, Mr Rogers was landlord of the Queensfield pub, Queensfield, for seven years.

The family spent a year in Basingstoke, but never settled.

"He really liked Stratton, that was one of the reasons he took the pub when it became available," said Stephen.

"He will be sadly missed by all the family."

Mr Rogers had been battling with cancer of the kidney since 1999.

In 2001 the family was told it had spread to his lungs.

He was later forced to give up the pub due to ill health.

"I think I'll remember him stood behind the bar with a pint in his hand," said Stephen.

"I'd like to think that is how the regulars will remember him too."

His brother, Darren, 37, who lives in Spain, said: "All of my memories of him are my favourite."

Mr Rogers passed away on August 8, at Waltham Nursing Home in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. He had moved to Melton to be nearer to his sisters.

Mr Rogers funeral is being held today at Loughborough Crematorium at 2pm.

The family have asked for donations to the charity Cancer Research in lieu of flowers.

To make a donation contact the funeral director, Mr Richard Barnes, on 01664 565311.
