Glenn sets his sights on treble

CALNE TOWN: GLENN Armstrong believes Calne Town have got nothing to fear as they prepare for their first season in the Toolstation Western League Premier Division.

The Lillywhites' striker is never short on confidence and this has again proved the case as he set his sights high following last season's promotion and Les Phillips Cup final appearance.

It has been a turbulent summer behind the scenes at Bremhill View, with manager Kelvin Highmore leaving for Premier Division rivals Melksham Town, but, with Robbie Lardner now at the helm, Armstrong is convinced Calne will be a force to be reckoned with again this campaign.

He said: "I don't want to aim too high as this is our first go in the top flight but I really do think we will do well.

"We have to be looking to finish in the top six, maybe even a few a places better, and it would be good if we could win the Les Phillips Cup this time after just losing out in the last final on penalties.

"We did really well last year and beat a lot of Premier Division teams in our cup run. I don't think we are too scared of anyone but I am sure a lot of teams will be worried about playing us."

Highmore's departure sparked fears Calne's promotion winning squad would break up, by following their former boss to the Conigre, but despite his best attempts to take his players with him, only Gareth Evans and Justin Messenger have so far made the move.

Key players like defender Steve Casey, midfielder Danny Jones and striker Matt Pratley are just a few of a long line of Calne players who have turned down Highmore as the squad remains almost the same as last season.

Simon Hillier's decision to stay as the assistant manager at Bremhill View, rather than teaming up again with Highmore, has been cited a major reason for the team staying together but Armstrong insists it was never really an issue.

He said: "To be honest it was never going to happen. Why would we all want to move to Meksham when we have more than good team here?

"We all wanted to stay together and I think it is more about the team than the manager. Having said that Simon and Robbie staying at the club was the clincher as we all respect both of them.

"Simon was never going to Melksham either. He is Calne through and through and I am sure will be a Calne Town manager one day. I think maybe Kelvin thought we would all follow but he may be regretting things a bit now."

Armstrong, 22, was the club's top scorer last season with 24 goals and he is looking forward to getting his chance to prove he can score goals at a higher level.

He had a short spell with Devzies Town in the Premier Division as an 18-year-old, but after only being given 10 games he was moved on and now he feels he has a point to prove.

He said: "My personal target is to score over 25 goals this campaign. This will be my first real go at the Premier Division and I am confident in my own ability to be a success. I may be being a bit greedy but I also really want a good run in the FA Vase, who knows, a treble would be nice."
