Father and son are still waiting

A FATHER and son driving team will find out today if they can still compete in a charity car rally to Mongolia.

John Barker, 58, and his son Mark, 30, set off last Saturday in a Robin Reliant to take part in the Mongol Rally.

But they had only got as far as Calais when the car broke down and they were forced to return home.

But they will discover today whether they are allowed to compete in a replacement Ford Sierra.

They had hoped to find out sooner and be on their way today if they had been given the go-ahead but they are still waiting to hear from the Mongolian authorities.

The problem stems from a £2,800 import tax Mongolia charges anyone who leaves a car in the country.

The authorities had agreed to waive this for the 42 rally competitors so the cars could be given to local charities but it is not yet clear whether a new car can be added to the list.

The two, from Stratton St Margaret, hoped to raise £7,000 for the Send a Cow charity which provides livestock to African villages.
