Biker dies after road smash

Whitehouse Bridge in SwindonA 51-YEAR-OLD Swindon man has died after his motorbike collided with a car last night. He was taken to Great Western Hospital with serious injuries and died during the night.

The accident happened at 6.40pm at Whitehouse Bridge, by the junction of Station Road and Corporation Street.

The motorcyclist, who has not yet been named by police, was riding a Kawasaki ZX 12R along Corporation Street and had just passed under Whitehouse Bridge when the collision with a Mitsubishi Warrior took place.

He was travelling in the direction of Manchester Road and was overtaking a car at the time.

PC Simon Akers, of Swindon traffic police, said "While under the bridge the motorbike was seen to overtake a vehicle described by witnesses as green, possibly a Volkswagen Passat."

He added that the traffic lights at the location had not been working for some time.

Police are making an urgent appeal for witnesses to the accident.

Swindon police spokeswoman Alivina Kumar said: "We are particularly keen to trace the driver, and any passengers, of the car that was overtaken by the motorcycle as it travelled under Whitehouse Bridge.

"The driver of this vehicle must have witnessed the collision which occurred directly in front of the car.

"It is believed that this vehicle is not involved in the collision in any way and we urge the driver to get in touch."
