Italian market is put on hold

RESIDENTS of Wootton Bassett will have to wait a little longer for a taste of Italy following the cancellation of next month's market.

The two-day Italian market was due to be held in the High Street on July 30 and 31 but last week organisers requested that the dates were moved one day earlier. But it has not been possible to change the dates due to licence complications and both the town council and market manager Francesco Accurso have agreed to cancel the event.

Deputy town clerk Wendy Marchment said: "The market was going to be selling wines and liqueurs and therefore we had to go through the courts to get a liqueur licence and to then change the dates was going to be an absolute nightmare.

"It's a real upset because we've been advertising it everywhere but in the end we mutually agreed that it would have to be cancelled."

The next continental market to visit Wootton Bassett will be a French market on September 18. This will be followed by another Italian market, also managed by Mr Accurso, in November.
