A new chapter opens as library celebrates

Isabel Mason, right, who worked at West Swindon Library when it was first opened and manager Karen Leyden Picture Ref: 78087-30WEST Swindon Library has celebrated its 20th birthday.

The celebrations kicked off on Saturday with a day out for all the family which included a range of activities throughout the day.

Children were able to make their own cards, have a party time with Creative Kids, and enjoy face painting, story time and a games workshop. It was not all for the youngsters because there was also flower arranging, hand massages and a workshop by the Haydon Artist Society.

As well as the activities there was also a special cake which was cut by the manager who ran the library 20 years ago.

Ann Farr, who was the library manager 20 years ago was the special guest at the party. Today, she is still at the library working as an administrative assistant.

The library's principal manager Karen Leyden, said: "I like the way we appeal to a wide range of ages.

"It's nice to be dealing with people who want to learn.

"Libraries have changed dramatically over the years and now it's not all about books.

"Twenty years ago librarians ran them. But now it's run more on business rather than based on lending books."
