Cost to stand

I WAS fascinated to read how much the "wannabe" politicians paid in this election. But surely the full cost does not add up here?

For a candidate to stand they have to pay a £500 deposit returned if they secure more than five per cent of the vote.

So, apart from the candidates from the big three parties, the others would have lost this deposit. Therefore, costs per vote certainly was not value for money for the majority of candidates.

They just wasted their hard-earned cash.
