Malmesbury 104, Marshfield 94

GLOS/WILTS TWO: AN all round performance by Charlie Langton helped Malmesbury pick up their first victory of the season to win by ten runs against local rivals Marshfield.

Langton hit 47 and picked up five wickets in a low-scoring game.

Malmesbury captain Ed Shellard said: "Wickets still fall like ninepins but Charlie batted in another world as for the third consecutive game he drove beautifully and powerfully.

"If only everyone watching could repeat the skill set on display we could get lots of batting points."

Shellard said more batting practise would be put in this week as he hoped to build up some momentum and rise up the league.

Malmesbury managed to reach only 104 with only three batsmen reaching double figures with Tom Lamb (3-18) and Matt Watson (3-30) the main wicket takers for Marshfield on a green pitch.

The home side looked consigned to another loss as Marshfield, although missing four first team regulars, reached 58-1 but Langton, having switched ends, found a much better rhythm and some much needed fiery pace.

He finished with 5-37, the final spell being 5-9.

Richard Gaunt also chipped in with a mixture of deliveries that garnished three wickets in his first three overs and the return of Richard Mosdell gained him a second vital wicket.

There were 22 overs remaining when the last wicket fell.

Shellard said: "Rich Jefferson also deserves a strong mention for his spell of seven overs for only eight runs and he should have had a wicket.

"Richard Mosdell bowled well again picking up two wickets and Richard Gaunt picked up three.

"Unfortunately we will be missing both of them for Saturday's game but we have Chris Hurst and Ollie Langton back so it will be good to see how they perform.

"The only other player who is doubtful is Phil Cavey but at least now we have more players challenging for the first team."

Malmesbury host Hinton Charterhouse on Saturday looking for only their second win of the season.
