Sign refusal hits pre-school

Old Court Community Pre-School committee secretary Sue Millington is disappointed that councillors have refused to allow a sign promoting the nursery.

Pupil numbers at the pre-school on Station Road have been declining but the amenities committee last week decided against granting permission for a sign which would have been in the grounds of the Civic Centre.

Mrs Millington said: "We thought it would be good to have a sign because we are set back from the road which makes us harder to find.

"Quite a few of the other pre-schools and nurseries in Bassett are along the road side and are therefore easier to see."

But councillors felt that a sign in the Civic Centre grounds would have an adverse impact on the already congested car park.

Coun Audrey Wannell said: "I don't think we need to have our car park cluttered up with another sign because it encourages people to come and park there."

Councillors also suggested that falling numbers were not specific to Old Court Community Pre-School but was a trend throughout the town.
