I was over limit but didn't break law

IN Reply to Dave Wallis's letter about my story on the survey I carried out on the M4 at 75mph (Adver June 15) and his suggestion that I admitted breaking the speed limit and should be culpable of 12 penalty points and associated fines.

He should note the following.

The law allows for +/- 10 per cent speedo error.

This relates to a maximum permitted true speed of 77mph and I drove at an indicated 75mph.

I have calibrated my speedo by time and distance using a stopwatch and marker posts on the M4 and my speedo is pretty accurate (within one or two mph at 70mph).

I therefore did not break the law but I can guarantee that everybody who overtook me did speedo error or not.

A HAYWARD
