'Flying' car hits cottage

A DOWNTON couple were left badly shaken and counting the cost after a car ploughed into the front of their Grade II-listed cottage on Saturday night, causing thousands of pounds' worth of damage.

Malcolm Read was in the sitting room of his home in The Borough when a Fiat carrying four people plunged through the wall at 10.15pm, creating a 6ft by 12ft hole.

The car had been travelling through Downton from the High Street end towards the A338 and appeared to take off as it came over the Iron Bridge.
