Shortage of builders

THE south west's historic buildings are under threat from a shortage of skilled craftsmen, according to the National Heritage Training Group.

Research found 2,344 people work within the built heritage sector in the south west, preserving 535,000 pre-1919 historic buildings.

However, with 23 per cent of contractors having vacancies and the workload increasing, the industry needs to recruit 500 people in the next 12 months to meet immediate demand.
