Swindon girls go one better at Kidlington

GIRL'S FOOTBALL: SWINDON Ladies' Under 10 girls team eventually found the winning touch at the Kidlington Seven-a-Side tournament at the weekend.

The girls team had finished runners-up in their two previous outings this summer, but proved untouchable at the Oxfordshire tournament.

Swindon Spitfires under 12s took two evenly matched teams and put in some strong performances on their way to third and fourth places.

The A side got off to a good start with Alice Smith's strike enough to see off St Edmunds 1-0, followed by the same score and scorer against Bloxham.

Next up were the host side and eventual winners Kidlington A, who showed why they had convincingly won the Oxford League by beating Spitfires 2-0.

Another 2-0 defeat followed against Benson before Kidlington B were held to a 1-1 draw, Smith again on target from Emily Willson's free-kick.

Spitfires' final game was against their B team counterparts and a win for either side would have meant a runners-up spot.

A hard fought encounter ended goalless, though, and that saw the A team finish third on the day, a point behind Kidlington B.

Spitfires A squad: Amy Bailey, Lucy March, Leanne New, Alice Smith, Kirsty Williams, Alice Willson, Emily Willson.

Spitfires B got off to a slower start, with a goalless draw against Bloxham, followed by a 2-0 defeat by Kidlington A.

Things picked up with a 1-0 win over Benson thanks to an angled drive from Georgina Lenoard, before Katie New's goal rescued a point against St Edmunds in a 1-1 draw.

After the 0-0 draw with their A team, Spitfires B finished up with a 1-1 draw with Kidlington B, Sammie Smith with their equaliser.

Spitfires B squad: Jenny Gray, Nicole Harding, Georgia Lenoard, Katie New, Sammie Smith, Sophie Smith.
