Nationwide invests in the future of planet

Wiltshire Wildlife Trust officer Steve Pagett talks to Nationwide employee Kate Bell Picture Ref: 77790-32NATIONWIDE employees have been finding out how to be more eco-friendly as part of World Environment Day.

Willow sculpture, energy efficient homes and ecological foot printing were all on display at the Piper's Way headquarters yesterday.

Andrew Litchfield, head of social responsibility at Nationwide, said: "As a mutual building society, we take our environmental responsibility extremely seriously.

"We are sure that our day of activities helped us raise awareness of the issues and help demonstrate Nationwide's commitment to sustainability."

The day's activities included speakers and workshops and each employee was asked to make their own personal environmental pledge.

All the pledges made by staff were pinned together to make a large tree, to demonstrate how a large number of small changes can add up to make a big difference.

In a message to staff at Nationwide, which sponsors World Environment Day, Margaret Beckett MP, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, said: "I am pleased to endorse the events for World Environment Day.

"I am encouraged to see that your commitment to the day is mirrored by your commitment to improve you own organisational performance."
