Firms may be missing out

I WOULD like to express the disappointment my daughter is experiencing from some of this town's major employers at the lack of responses to letters sent seeking work.

Six weeks ago she wrote 25 letters to a variety of employers seeking summer work.

She has received just five replies and no offers of employment.

I thought people were one of the major assets within an organisation?

This sets a poor example to someone who still has her working life in front of her.

She could easily adopt the "why bother?" attitude that we are actively trying to discourage.

My daughter is a bright 20-year-old who has just completed her first year of university studying marketing and she is eager to gain practical experience.

She also visited many of the employment agencies in the town. Initially she was told it was too soon to apply and now she is being told many of their clients are recruiting themselves.

I find it hard to believe there are no employers willing to employ an enthusiastic and bright young adult for the summer months or at the very least to respond to a letter asking about possible vacancies.

Who knows where this could lead? Maybe it could benefit the employer long-term once my daughter completes her degree.
