Campaign hits illegal cigarette sale

SWINDON Council is congratulating itself on a reduction in sales of cigarettes to under 16-year-olds.

The council entered into an agreement with the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister in 2002 to reduce sales of alcohol and cigarettes.

Trading standards officers worked with health care colleagues, teachers, Swindon Police and local businesses to achieve the targets.

Cabinet member for the environment, Jemima Milton, pictured, said: "This is a great example of joined up working within the council.

"I know all of those involved will continue their hard work to drive the figure down even further."

Tobacco Control Campaign co-ordinator Sarah Smart said she was delighted by the results.

"This is another important step towards a smoke-free Swindon.

"I would appeal to all tobacco retailers to keep firmly in mind the idea, No ID, No Sale to any young person who wants to purchase cigarettes.

"A young person can get a CitizenCard through any of the council's customer service points, libraries and stores in Swindon."
