Recycling rates grow with spring

An outbreak of Spring cleaning is boosting recycling rates at household recycling centres across Wiltshire.

Staff at the centres have noticed an increase in the numbers of people using the sites, as people turn their thoughts to clearing out the things they no longer need.

Jake Quinn, site supervisor at Purton HRC reckons the site is receiving up to 150 computer monitors and televisions each week along with old furniture, bikes, toys, clothes and even garden gnomes.

And Richard Silk who runs the Devizes site said he had noticed a real boost in everything from furniture to toys.

"It's all lofts and garages at the moment - people are really getting stuck in. We have had everything from games that have been outgrown to clothes and carpets," he said.

The county's ten recycling centres are operated for Wiltshire County Council by contractors Hills Recycling, which claims to recycle more than 70 per cent of the rubbish it receives.
