A little piece of Japan takes root at school

OAKTREE Primary School in Park South is turning Japanese. Workers from the Nationwide Building Society spent a day creating a Japanese garden for pupils to enjoy.

Fourteen employees who swapped life in the retail finance department to clear away undergrowth and lay paving slabs.

They also dug over an area of ground which will be used to grow herbs and tomatoes for the school kitchen.

Mark Twigg, 31, who helped with the project, said: "It was a really great day.

"It was hard work as we had to move four tonnes of stone for the courtyard.

"But as a reward we got to eat a school dinner, which is something I haven't done for a while.

"We also played football with the kids."

The courtyard at the school in Priory Road has been decorated with shrubs and plants.
