Crusade is run with girl power

GAZETTE & HERALD: A 15-YEAR-OLD from Calne is on a crusade to provide more facilities for girls in the town.

Kayley Raeburn, from MaAughley Square, stood up at the town's annual meeting on April 11 and said: "Sometimes: girls just want time to themselves."

Miss Raeburn, who is studying her GCSEs at John Bentley School, said: "We have a youth club but I am nearly 16 now and for people my age they are so strict you cannot do anything."

Miss Raeburn explained at some clubs the girls are called names and teased by the boys and that girls like to natter and discuss things they don't want to involve boys in.

"What we need is a club mainly for females, aged 14-19. Boys the same age could come in one night a week.

"We could also have information available on contraception, alcohol, sexual health and employment."

Miss Raeburn pointed out two shops in Phelps Parade, which are currently empty, as ideal sites for the club.

Calne Town Mayor, Coun Carol O'Gorman, said he girls could come along to a working group which deals with solutions for youth in Calne.
