Drivers warned to watch speed

DRIVERS on the M4 need to watch their speed more carefully from tomorrow when new speed cameras start running.

The cameras will operate from vans on bridges between junctions 14 and 18 in a bid to enforce the legal 70mph speed limit.

Drivers will face fines starting at £60, with three penalty points, if they drive over the limit.

It is hoped that the cameras will cut down on accidents on the stretch of the road which has become an accident blackspot.

The cameras are the result pressure on the Government from the Wiltshire and Swindon Safety Camera Partnership which says that the casualty rate on the M4 is higher than on the average motorway.

There have been 14 crashes on the stretch of the M4 between the Chippenham (17) and Swindon east (15) exits in the past month.
