'Chance to tidy up tatty home'

PLANS to extend an 18th century listed cottage have been put on hold while councillors visit the site.

The application for 117 Bradford Road, Winsley is recommended for refusal because planning officers said it would ruin the special character of the building.

But on Thursday West Wiltshire District Council planning committee voted to hold a site visit rather than simply back the officer's comments.

Jane McDermott, a planning consultant acting on behalf of the applicants, said this plan would tidy up a "tatty" 1960s extension.

She said: "This building is not a virgin. It has been considerably altered already."

Cllr Bill Viles said: "We now have an opportunity to correct this eyesore. In medical terms this cottage requires surgery to heal its wounds.

"The present extension should not have been built in the first place. It's horrendous."
