On marks to tread trail

THOUSANDS of walkers and runners will again set off from Avebury on May bank holiday Sunday on the 26-mile route to Stonehenge to raise money for the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust.

The trust is urging as many people as possible to put on their trainers and tread the route through some of Wiltshire most stunning landscapes, across Marlborough Downs and onto Salisbury Plain.

An army of nearly 200 volunteers will help run the Sarsen Trail sponsored walk and Neolithic marathon and half marathon. The event is Wiltshire Wildlife Trust's biggest fundraiser of the year and raises vital seed capital to help them manage dozens of nature reserves throughout the county.

Event organiser Steve Pagett said: "Last year saw more than 2,000 people take part, raising more than £55,000, which will be used to safeguard Wiltshire's natural heritage for future generations.

"We want to make this year's trail even better so please register for the event, collect a sponsor form, start raising money, and have a fantastic day out at the same time."

Well-behaved dogs are always welcome on the walk but for those with behavioural problems dog whisperer Steve Fryer will be on hand to employ his gentle technique of quiet praise and reward to help animals sort out their attitude problems.

The event sets off from Avebury on Sunday May 1. You don't have to walk the entire 26 miles. You can stop at the half way mark at Redhorn Hill, Urchfont, or start there and walk to Stonehenge.

To register for the event, send a stamped addressed envelope to the trust's office at Elm Tree Court, Long Street, Devizes SN10 1NJ or download the registration form from www.wiltshirewildlife.org, and send it to the trust before April 13, enclosing a cheque to cover the entry fees. After this date you can only register on the day.

To volunteer to help on the day, contact Mr Pagett on (01380) 725670.
