RUGBY fans from across Swindon relived England's World Cup triumph on Saturday when the William Webb Ellis trophy came to town.
With Swing Low, Sweet Chariot playing throughout the Brunel Centre and England rugby shirts on the backs of almost everyone, it felt as if England had won the trophy all over again.
The trophy's visit is part of the Rugby Football Union's nationwide Sweet Chariot Tour, which aims to attract more people to the game. And judging from the crowds gathered around the trophy and the queues looping around the Brunel Plaza, the tour looks to be on target for success.
The Evening Advertiser promotions team were at the event and for just £5, fans were having their pictures taken alongside the cup.
At the front of the queue was dad Dave Jenkins, 38, of Gorse Hill, who took along his four children plus a friend's child.
They had all been waiting since 7.30am and their enthusiasm and excitement at seeing the cup was infectious.
"It's brilliant!" said eight-year-old Laura Jenkins, who could remember watching the final in November when England defeated Australia 20-17 in Sydney.
Her brother, nine-year-old Aaron, said: "I'm really glad we all came down today. It was worth getting up early."
Andy Hubble, coach at Swindon Rugby Club, had taken his squad of under-eight players to see the trophy. He said: "It's been a great morning for us.
"Our youngsters will remember seeing this trophy for years to come.
"The knock-on effects of England winning the World Cup have been fantastic for our club. I've got more players this season than I've ever had before."
