Country dance day attracts 300 children

HUNDREDS of young dancers packed into the Riverside Club, Melksham, for an annual Day of Dance.

On a bright spring day more than 300 children from schools all over west Wiltshire were put through their country dance steps by tutors from Melksham Country Dancers club.

The annual event has been running for 28 years with numbers swelling each year.

Secretary of the club Christine Gale said: "It really was a great occasion for us as the numbers exceeded even the record attendance of last year.

"The morning session was a bit crowded and noisy, but so enjoyable. It's very encouraging for us to see children enjoying and participating in their own heritage.

"We would like to thank all the children and teachers for coming, and here's to next year!"

Schoolchildren from Corsham Regis, Hilperton, Neston and Holt joined pupils from the Melksham schools for the event.

Instructor Stan Vice talked them through their steps and was accompanied by top Celidh band Wiltshire Klof.
