More power for police

NEW powers to fine criminals for anti-social behaviour have been introduced to police officers in Wiltshire.

Officers can now issue penalty notices to offenders for crimes including causing harassment and being drunk and disorderly.

The new Penalty Notice for Disorder came into effect on Thursday to target criminals over 18 years old and can lead to fines of up to £80.

Peter Vaughan, Wiltshire's assistant chief constable, said: "This new procedure will be an effective and efficient way of addressing low-level anti-social behaviour in Wiltshire."

Once the notice has been issued the offender must pay within 21 days or request a court appearance.

The new penalty notices can be issued by uniformed officers, police community support officers and authorised officers at police stations.
