No cup final shocks for underdogs

LUCKLESS Salisbury were outclassed by Marlborough in their Wiltshire Cup final at Devizes.

But the 5-0 defeat against a team which plays the equivalent of two leagues above them, was no disgrace for Tim Green's side.

Despite playing most of the season with a 13-man squad, Salisbury enjoyed an excellent run of results, finishing fourth in the league and reaching their first major final for more than 20 years.

Salisbury were always going to find Marlborough tough opponents, but two disappointing early mistakes which cost two goals, left them with a mountain to climb.

To their credit, Salisbury fought all the way. Dan Dines forced the Marlborough 'keeper into a diving save and Dickie Head, Andy Grandfield and Ben Croxall piled on the pressure but could not find the final touch to score.

In the second half Marlbor-ough stepped up the pace but still Salisbury fought back and defended well.

Charlie Yiangou hammered a shot only inches wide to miss out on a consolation goal.
