Golf game at top club up for auction

FORMER media mogul Eddy Shah has donated a game of golf at Surrey's prestigious Wentworth Club to Wootton Bassett's mayoral charity.

Mr Shah, who founded the Today newspaper in 1983, has also donated a round of golf for four and an overnight stay at Wiltshire Golf and Country Club, near Wootton Bassett, which he bought three years ago.

Mayor Marion Sweet is offering the prizes in a silent auction.

The proceeds will benefit her nominated charity, Carer Support North Wilts.

She said: "Anyone interested in the prizes can put their bids forward to the town council.

"The winner of the round of golf at the Wiltshire club will be announced at the Mayor's ball but we will keep the competition open for longer for the Wentworth prize. This prize is suitable for someone with a golfing handicap.

"We want to get as much money as possible for that. It is very generous of Mr Shah to make these donations that will benefit people in Wootton Bassett.

"Carers Support is a wonderful charity. It helps people who often don't choose to become carers but they do such admirable work in looking after loved ones who may be ill or frail."

She also urged people to attend the annual Mayor's Ball, a black tie event, which this year will be held at the Wiltshire Golf and Country Club on April 23.

Anyone interested in attending the event, or bidding for either of the prizes, should contact Wootton Bassett Town Council on 01793 850222.
