Three injured as accident closes M4

THE driver and passenger of a car hit by three vehicles in an accident on the M4 escaped with minor injuries.

Motorists were stuck in traffic for about an hour after the accident which took place around 6am yesterday between junction 17 and junction 16.

A 49-year-old man and the 57-year-old woman passenger, both from Kent, were travelling westbound in a Ford Mondeo when their car was in collision with a lorry.

The woman suffered chest injuries and whiplash and the man, who was driving, received minor leg injuries.

Their car hit the nearside verge, and came to rest in the middle lane.

It was then in collision with another truck, which shunted it into lane three where an Audi TT, which was being driven by a 29-year-old man from West Glamorgan, hit it. He suffered a bang to the head.

The three people in the two cars were all treated at Swindon's Great Western Hospital.

All three lanes were closed for 20 minutes while debris was cleared, which resulted in about three miles of tailbacks.
