WH Smith gives up on CD singles

WH Smith is to stop selling CD singles. The Swindon-based retail giant has decided to abandon the singles market, which has seen sales fall by up to a third, and focus on albums and DVDs.

A WH Smith spokeswoman said: "When operating in a competitive market, it is best practice to review the demands of our customers alongside maximising the best use of our retail space.

"As a result of the growing demand for albums and DVDs coupled with the 33 percent market-wide fall in the singles market, we have made a business decision to withdraw from the CD singles.

"This will enable us to strengthen and further develop our range of albums and DVDs, a sector of the market where we can maximise sales of better selling lines."

A date for the withdrawal of singles from the company's stores has yet to be decided.
