14 shops break the 'age' law

ALCOHOL, tobacco and fire works were sold to underage youngsters by 14 shopkeepers in Wiltshire, according to a report this week.

In a series of tests by Trading Standards last year using teenage volunteers, 10 retailers sold alcohol, three cigarettes and one firework to the youngsters.

The tests have led to 10 companies being issued cautions, with two being prosecuted.

Trading Standards manager Steve Clover said: "We must congratulate the vast majority of retailers who did not sell age-restricted goods to volunteers."

Trading Standards will be giving advice to shopkeepers on how to ensure they do not break the laws on the sales of alcohol, National Lottery products, tobacco products, solvents and fireworks.

Officers plan a further test purchases and will continue to promote and support the Validate UK and Citizencard proof of age identity schemes in schools.
