Salisury hold out for eighth success

A DEPLETED Salisbury side hung on to record their eighth win of the season despite a tense finish at Wimborne.

Salisbury, who were unable to field any substitutes for the match, dominated the first ten minutes but were unable to convert the good midfield play of Dan Dines and James Whittle.

Salisbury repeatedly failed to keep possession into the final quarter of the pitch, but the breakthrough finally came when Dines converted Salisbury's first short corner of the match.

Wimborne then hit back strongly and pinned Salisbury in their own half, looking to exploit a makeshift defence.

A procession of short corners were kept out but the Wayfarers finally drew level when a penalty was awarded after one effort struck Andy Miles' foot on the goal line.

Wimborne pressed on and a communication mix-up in the Salisbury defence meant the Wayfarers went into half-time with a 2-1 lead.

Salisbury started the second half looking like a different team.

Attacking in numbers, they were rediscovering their early-season form and it wasn't long before Ben Croxall set up Dickie Head for the equaliser.

Just two minutes later Head deflected Dines' shot from a short corner to put Salisbury back in front.

From their next attack, Head completed a quick-fire hat-trick to give Salisbury a commanding advantage, using the same short corner routine to good effect.

With the visitors in the ascendancy, Wimborne made the most of a lucky break to pull back a third, but this was quickly cancelled out by an unstoppable second from Dines.

Salisbury had several chances to wrap up the game, but somehow failed to find a way through.

Wayfarers made the most of their opponents' missed opportunities and a late strike meant that Salisbury had a nervous wait for the final whistle, but they successfully held on for a well-deserved victory.

On Saturday Salisbury take on second placed Yateley at Skew Bridge (1pm).
