Smart is still best and that's official

The British male still prefers to dress in a stylish and professional manner and is becoming increasingly un comfortable as the 'dress down' working ethic spreads.

This is the key finding from a new survey out today from OfficeSMART, a UK office supplies group.

Elena Neville, group marketing director for the firm, says: "Historically, here in the UK, the trend has been towards casual for some time now.

"However the latest evidence from the US is that there is a clear message from employees themselves that they prefer smart dress in the office environment."

Indeed, psychologist Dr David Lewis (whoever he is?) agrees that smart is best.

According to him: "Not so long ago casual dress was held to make executives feel more

relaxed and confident, to break down barriers and encourage teamwork.

"Now smart attire is making a rapid comeback as more and more bosses and employees recognise that what seems appropriate on a golf course can prove a positive disadvantage in the highly competitive world of work."

Well, although I have no medical training, I'd have to disagree with that last statement.

Sartorially speaking, 'what seems appropriate' on the golf course ie, naff plus fours can never have reap a positive advantage in any area of anyone's life.

Anyway, that aside, Dr Lewis adds: "By dressing smartly we create an impression of ourselves that enhances our self-image, so building greater confidence. This in turn aids problem solving and decision making. In big business if you dress smart you are more likely to think smart!"

You're also more likely to score with the opposite sex, but that's another aside, too.

So just how do you maintain that just groomed look when working in a call centre?

Thankfully, there are three golden rules to follow, which, as you will see, are easy to abide by.

Whenever possible dress in a way that feels right for you. For most of us in a business setting this means both a suit and tie, or smart casual clothes to communicate a professional work ethic.

When you feel comfortable and have confidence in what you are wearing, this will be reflected in your attitude and performance.

When dressing smartly be sure that even the smallest detail of your attire reflects this message. Some people, for example, while wearing a smart suit and tie, neglect to polish their shoes.

Couldn't be easier could it? Now all you need to do is find a job that pays the kind of money which means you can afford to dress well.

Sadly, as those jobs are nearly always in IT, it's more than likely that no matter how much you earn, you'll still end up looking like a geek.
