A WOMAN underwent surgery at a specialist hospital yesterday after an assault at her Freshbrook home.
The woman, whose identity has yet to be revealed by Swindon police, was attacked very early on Sunday.
An ambulance crew arrived at her home in Crawford Close shortly after 1am to find she had suffered facial lacerations and broken bones.
The woman was initially taken to the Great Western Hospital, but was transferred yesterday to the John Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford, where she later underwent an operation.
The police are anxious to trace anybody who can shed light on what happened, including a complete stranger the victim may have called by misdialling during a frantic attempt to telephone for help.
Force spokeswoman Alvina Kumar said: "Her name has not been released and her family is not commenting.
"The woman's injuries are not thought to be life threatening, but we have been unable to speak to her since she was attacked.
"We are really desperate for people to come forward with information.
"We also want to speak to a woman whom we understand the victim seemingly called by mistake she may have some vital information."
Mrs Kumar's call was echoed by the senior police officer in charge of the investigation.
DCI Kevin Capstick said: "The individual called by the victim may be aware of vital information which may identify the attacker."
Mrs Kumar added that crime scene investigators were at the scene of the attack shortly after the police were called.
They have been using various forensic techniques in a bid to discover how the premises were entered and to recover any other useful evidence.
Anybody who feels they may be able to help is asked to call the police on 01793 528111 or the confidential CrimeStoppers hotline on 0800 555111.
Alternatively, they can call in at any police station.
