Drive is on to put pupils on the right road

Ref. 29051-23STUDENTS were given the chance to get behind the wheel without even leaving their school grounds. Hreod Parkway pupils gained some practical driving experience by specially trained instructors.

The off-road driving course, part of BSM's Ignition programme, is designed to teach road safety awareness and perception skills to 15 to 17 year-olds.

Students working in teams of three to a car completed tasks such as steering while wearing vision-restricting goggles and judging width and distances by manoeuvring a vehicle between cars.

Deputy headteacher Tom Wilkes said that the lessons were part of the school's enrichment programme and are offered to the older students first.

He said: "There is a long queue of pupils wanting to do it. They just appreciate being able to get behind the wheel."

BSM Ignition manager Andy Brown said: "The off-road sessions are really popular with students and they're learning valuable lessons while having fun."
