Bid for better travel links

Wootton Bassett could be entitled to £10,000 to help improve community transport in the town and outlying villages.

The town council is drafting a questionnaire to enable members of the public to give ideas and suggestions for ways to improve community transport.

Over the last four years there have been several community transport schemes set up, most on a voluntary basis, but none have proved to be sustainable over the long term.

Now the council hopes that by bidding for the £10,000 available from central Government, they can create a sustainable, long-term community transport service.

Similar grants have already been awarded to a rural taxi service for elderly and disabled people living in the more remote villages in Wiltshire, and a taxi-bus service in and around Malmesbury to take people to local health and leisure facilities.

North Wiltshire MP James Gray has expressed his support for the scheme, and has written to Tony McNulty at the Department of Transport.
