Intellectual property specialists move in

ANDREW Hodder, president of Salisbury & District Chamber of Commerce, was in Upper Woodford last month to open Chapman Molony, the area's first specialist intellectual property practice.

The practice is staffed by Helga Chapman and Dr Anna Molony and will provide clients with a range of services, including establishing and defending patent, trademark, copyright and design rights.

Chapman Molony said it chose the Salisbury area for its main office, as it is just over an hour from London and Heathrow airport and close to Bath, Swindon, Southampton, Bournemouth and Portsmouth.

Its premises are in Renshaw Barns and its second office is in Leamington Spa.

o Intellectual property is the term used to cover inventions, designs, copyright works, such as literary, artistic and musical creations, and trademarks.

Intellectual property can be treated as an asset and has value in its own right.

It may be possible to protect these assets through law, for example using patents and trademark or design registrations.

Chartered patent and trademark agents are experts in this area of law and obtain registered rights such as patents, designs and trademarks, on behalf of clients.

Patent agents, in particular, are required to have a science degree in addition to their specialist legal qualifications, to assist in their understanding of new technology.

The company's technical expertise lies in engineering, electronics and optics-based technology, but it is also able to undertake work relating to other technical areas.

In addition to assisting clients in protecting their intellectual property, Chapman Molony provides clients with audits, which identify protectable intellectual property within their business.
