Mixed team book quarter final place

WESTLECOT'S mixed team are also on the glory trail, reaching the quarter-finals in the Egham Trophy after producing a superb team performance on Sunday in the last 16 of the national inter-club mixed championship to demolish Jack Hi by 29 shots.

Whereas in the previous round of the competition they had only edged home by a shot against Avon Valley, they easily brushed aside the Hayes, Middlesex, side's challenge 98-69.

Westlecot took the honours on two rinks, drew one and just lost the other.

At Hayes, Neil Smith's rink made a lightning start and were 20-6 up at 10 ends and coasting. They were pegged back to 27-16 at 18 before sealing an emphatic 20 shots win with 1, 4 and 4 on the last three ends.

Alongside Dave Snell's quartet, the last round heroes, were involved in a tight game and trailed 11-9 at 10 ends.

They went 17-12 down at 15 but had pulled back to 21-21 at 20 ends before dropping a sot on the last.

At home Mel Biggs rink were always in charge and led 10-1 at five ends and 13-4 at 10.

They were 21-8 at 18 but pegged back to a 10-shot winning margin at the end.

Mark Dyer's rink were tied at 4-4 after five ends and led 9-8 at 10 but then fell behind. They trailed 16-11 at 15 but recovered to draw 18-18.

Whiteknights (Reading) will be Westlecot's opposition in the quarter-finals, to be played by Sunday February 22.

RESULTS Home Rink 1: Wendy Anderson, Jenny Vowles, Neil Hope and Mel Biggs beat P Cater 23-13; Rink 2: Kevin Embling, Josie Lloyd, Doris Woodley and Mark Dyer drw with R Leleux 18-18. Away Rink 1: Maureen Rogers, Mary Moss, Dave Vowles and Dave Snell lost to A Buter 21-22; Rink 2: Jean Bird, Joyce Laming, Hedley Bowen and Neil Smith beat R Thorne 36-16.

Westlecot beat Jack Hi 98-69.
