Workers will hold power

Jennie Brooks, HR Business Adviser at Business Link Berkshire and Wiltshire.

Business Link Berkshire and Wiltshire's offices in Swindon are based at the Old Railway Tunnel, and on the way in to work I often pass the old railway buildings.

The working life of a railway worker 150 years ago, when the Swindon Evening Advertiser was launched, was often harsh.

Thankfully, things have really changed for today's workforce and, looking to the future, I predict that the balance of power will continue to shift in the opposite direction and will come to rest fully in the hands of the employee.

As for trends in the business arena, I think employers will realise the importance of recruiting and retaining the right staff, and to do this will completely rethink the traditional working relationship to include more of a focus on the all important work-life balance."
